Fiji – April 18 – 25, 2009
This trip was truly amazing. Although the flight over intimidated some of us (9-10 hours) it was not as bad as we were imagining. The first resort we went to, Beqa Lagoon, was breathtaking. The grounds were immaculate, the staff was friendly, helpful and fun, and the diving was all that we could ask for. Lots of colorful coral and fish. This resort was also a great place to go to experience the local culture. They had activities everyday that expanded from learning about the coconut (always be as sweet and useful as the coconut is a very good saying to live by) to visits to the local villages and school. The food was amazing and sometimes it was hard to decide which menu option you were going to have. I have to give a special thanks to the dive crew and waitstaff for assisting Terry to learn the Fijian language. As soon as Terry shares some of the sayings with me I will post them to this page.
The second resort we went to, Dive Kadavu, was equally enjoyable. After a rocky first night we all settled in and really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. Mary and David are truly gracious hosts and our time there would not have been the same without them. This resort was a great place to sit back and relax. We had the chance to do a lot of walking on the beach and hunting for shells. The staff was again very friendly and fun. Terry had a great time getting Wise to come out of his shell. Luckily Terry didn’t try out any of his new vocabulary. The diving was awesome. Lots of swim thrus, sharks and we even got to see the Manta Rays.
This is one place we would be happy to visit again and again. I can’t say too much about the wonderful hospitality, friendliness and diving that Fiji has to offer.
Channel Islands – October 1-3, 2009
This was a wonderful quick get away. We made new friends, had wonderful food, great diving and lots of laughs. The kelp forrest was beautiful and the seals were fun to play with. The crew was awesome and the food was plentiful.
This was the first year we went during lobster season and it was quite an experience. Getting up at midnight was somewhat hard to conquer, but after the first dive it was exhilerating. Some of decided that next year we would get to sleep earlier and plan on 3 or 4 dives during the night and sleep our way home. We did decide that having just one day of lobster hunting was plenty. Just remember to ask for tips before you dive in.
Riding Rock, Bahamas – October 24-31, 2009
This was a repeat trip and was as wonderful as the first time. Michelle and her brothers run a fabulous resort. The staff is friendly and the food is wonderful and we can’t say enough about the diving. If you enjoy large coral swim throughs this is a must do.
We were able to see hammerheads and other sharks, lots of fish, and a few eels. Every dive is different. We even managed to do a successful search and recovery dive one afternoon. The good news is the reward was given out since it was a success. The bad news for some of the divers was it was spent that night in the bar.
This is a location that we plan to visit again.
